Roma Devri Küçük Asyası'nda Sporcu Dernekleri: Pisidia Antiokheia Örneği

Abstract

Tüm kurumlar gibi antik dönemin sanatçı ve sporcu dernekleri de bir dizi temel ihtiyacın neticesi olarak ortaya çıkıp gelişmiştir. Başlangıçta sınırlı bir coğrafyada -Hellas anakarasında- düzenlenen agonistik festivallere (bedensel, atlı ve müzikal yarışmalar) yalnızca yakın kent ve bölgelerden katılımcılar iştirak ediyordu. Günümüz küreselleşme sürecini andıran Hellenistik Dönem’le birlikte ise agonistik festivaller Akdeniz dünyasının dört bir köşesine yayılmıştır. Yaşanan bu hızlı değişim, herkesten daha çok agonistik organizasyonların baş aktörleri olan sanatçı ve sporcuları etkilemiştir. Roma’nın MÖ II. yüzyılda Akdeniz’in doğusunda askeri ve siyasi bir figür olarak ortaya çıkıp MÖ I. yüzyıl itibariyle bölgede tek hâkim güç olmasıyla var olan tüm festivaller tek çatı altında birbirine bağlanmıştır. Böylelikle geniş bir coğrafyada muazzam bir festival ağı kurulmuştur. Nitelikli bilgi ihtiyacının had safhaya çıktığı bu noktada ya da ortamda sporcu derneklerinin ilk kez Küçük Asya’da ortaya çıktığı görülmektedir. Sporcu dernekleri üzerine günümüze değin birçok çalışma yapılmış olmasına rağmen, konu ilk günkü muğlaklığını ve tartışılırlığını halen korumaktadır. Özellikle derneklerin ortaya çıkış süreci, şekli ve de yerleşik yerel şubeler problemi tartışmaların odak noktasını oluşturmaktadır. Üç bölümden oluşan bu çalışma kapsamında kısaca Yunan-Roma dünyasındaki festival geleneğine değinildikten sonra sporcu derneklerinin ortaya çıkış süreci, tarihi seyri, yapısı, işlevleri, merkezi otoriteyle ilişkisi ve Pisidia Antiokheia’sı özelinde yerleşik yerel şubeler sorunu incelenecektir.

The Athletic Guilds in Roman Asia Minor: The Case of Pisidia Antiokheia

Abstract

Like all institutions, the artists’ and athletes' associations of antiquity emerged and developed out of a series of basic needs. Initially, agonistic festivals were held in a limited geography -mainland Hellas- and were attended only by participants from nearby cities and regions. Henceforth, in the Hellenistic period, which resembles today's globalization process, agonistic festivals spread to all corners of the Mediterranean world. This rapid change particularly affected artists and athletes, who were the main actors in agonistic organizations. When Rome emerged as a military and political figure in the eastern Mediterranean in the second century BC and became the sole dominant power in the region by the first century BC, all existing festivals were connected under one roof. Hereby, an enormous festival network was established across a wide geography. At this point or in this environment, where the need for qualified information reached the highest level, it is seen that athletic guilds emerged for the first time in Asia Minor. Although many studies have been carried out on athletic guilds to date, the subject is still uncertain and debatable at many points. Particularly, the process of the emergence of guilds, their form, and the problem of settled local branches constitute the focal point of the discussions. Within the scope of this three-part study, after briefly mentioning the festival tradition in the Greco-Roman world, the emergence process of athletic guilds, their historical course, structure, functions, relationship with the central authority, and finally, the issue of static local branches in the case of Antioch of Pisidia will be examined.
