Abstract

The presence of syphilis disease has been identified in a female skeleton which was almost 30 years old and obtained from the excavations of Zeytinli Island (Erdek- Balıkesir) belonging to Early Byzantine Period (7. Century AD.) The discussions about the origin of syphilis disease dates back to the nineteenth century and the origin of this disease is explained by two different hypotheses as Colomb and Uniterian. The record of syphilis lesion from the old periods in Anatolian and Europe are very limited. It is aimed to contribute to the discussions on the origin of syphilis disease with syphilis disease identified in the skeleton of Zeytinli Island. As a result of the detailed researches on the study material, the pathological diseases other than syphilis disease such as cribra orbitalia, porotic hyperostosis and schmorl nodule have been traced
