GEÇMİŞİN YANKILARI: BİR ÇAPRAZ EDEBİYAT ÖRNEĞİ OLARAK DÜNYA BÜYÜLÜ BİR YER'DE ÖLÜM VE TARİH ÜZERİNE BİR ÇALIŞMA

Year 2025, Volume: 49 Issue: 3, 297 - 310, 28.11.2025

Abstract

Echoes of the Past: A Study on Death and History in Kit’s Wilderness as an Example of Crossover Literature

Year 2025, Volume: 49 Issue: 3, 297 - 310, 28.11.2025

Abstract

This study aims to analyse David Almond’s Kit’s Wilderness (1999), which serves as a compelling example of crossover literature, through the lens of the main theme of death by means of an exploration of how Almond intertwines the historical drama of the 19th-century child miners in England with the present-day narrative of two child characters. In the novel, the tragedy of child miners is re-enacted and narrated by two child characters through Christopher Watson’s art of storytelling and John Askew’s painting, and additionally, through an intriguing game they call the “death game”. In this study, it is observed that within the narrative, the prevalent theme of death permeates the storyline, providing a poignant portrayal of the deaths of the child miners, and their impact on the characters and the overarching plot. By means of the analysis of the relevant scenes and conversations in the novel, this study aims to unravel the deeper thematic implications and emotional resonance that death brings to the forefront of the novel. By so doing, the study illuminates the profound ways in which Almond intertwines past and present, weaving a tapestry of profound introspection and relevance that resonates with readers of all ages. Besides, it is believed that the analysis of the thematic richness and narrative complexity in Kit’s Wilderness will provide readers with emotions that will allow them to feel the enduring impact of the novel more deeply.
