Abstract
Psellos; filozof, öğretmen, hatip ve yüksek düzey bir bürokrat olarak Bizans’ın düşünsel ve siyasal yapısında etkili bir figürdür. Tarih yazımına isteksiz başlayan Psellos, çevresindekilerin ısrarı üzerine kaleme aldığı Khronographia’da, II. Basileios’tan (976-1025) VII. Mikhail Dukas’a (1071–1078) kadar hüküm süren on dört imparatoru ele alır. Eser, klasik kronik anlayışının ötesinde hükümdarların ahlaki ve psikolojik yönlerini merkeze alan bir yaklaşımla yazılmıştır. Dış politik gelişmelere ve askerî olaylara sınırlı şekilde değinilirken, saray içi entrikalar, bireylerin karakter özellikleri ve Psellos’un bizzat tanıklık ettiği olaylar ön plandadır. Eserdeki anlatım dili, dramatik unsurlar, klasik edebi motifler ve retorik figürlerle zenginleştirilmiştir. Bu yönüyle Khronographia, tarihsel bir anlatı olmasının yanında aynı zamanda edebi bir değer taşır. Selçuklu Türklerinden ve Malazgirt sonrası gelişmelerden yalnızca dolaylı şekilde bahsedilmesi eserin tarihsel kapsamını daraltsa da Bizans saray kültürünün iç yüzünü sunma gücü onu eşsiz kılar. Psellos’un birey odaklı tarih anlayışı ve klasik mirasa dayalı üslubu, Bizans tarih yazımında önemli bir kırılma noktası oluşturur. Khronographia, tarihî eksikliklerine rağmen, yazarının entelektüel derinliğini ve çağının ruhunu başarıyla yansıtan özgün bir metindir. Bu bağlamda çalışma Psellos’un Khronographia adlı eserini merkeze alarak onun tarih anlayışını, anlatı üslubunu ve Bizans tarih yazıcılığı içindeki yerini analiz etmeyi amaçlamaktadır.

Historiography of the Byzantine Bureaucrat, Philosopher and Historian Michael Psellos and his Historical Work Chronographia
Abstract
Psellos, as a philosopher, teacher, orator, and high-ranking bureaucrat, played a significant role in the intellectual and political structure of Byzantium. Although initially reluctant to write history, Psellos authored Khronographia at the insistence of those around him, covering the reigns of fourteen emperors from Basil II (976-1025) to Michael VII Doukas (976–1078). The work is written with an approach that goes beyond the conventional chronicle tradition, focusing primarily on the moral and psychological dimensions of the emperors. While foreign affairs and military events are only briefly mentioned, the narrative emphasizes courtly intrigues, individual character traits, and events personally witnessed by the author. The language of the text is enriched with dramatic elements, classical literary motifs, and rhetorical figures, lending Khronographia literary as well as historical value. Although Psellos refers only indirectly to the Seljuk Turks and the aftermath of the Battle of Manzikert, which narrows the historical scope of the work, his vivid depiction of Byzantine court culture makes the text unique. Psellos’ individual-centered historical perspective and classical style represent a pivotal shift in Byzantine historiography. Despite certain historical omissions, Khronographia remains an original work that reflects the intellectual depth of its author and captures the spirit of his time.
