Cases that Change the Thought of Old Age in the Process of Modernization - The Elderly on the Edge of Social Life

In a sense, the process of modernization is a process of social change. In this process, the family institution is one of the leading institutions. This change adversely affects the elderly who constitute the vulnerable, disadvantaged group. The problem of our study is to determine what causes aging in the modernization process. Individualization, industrialization and urbanization, change in family structure, increase of elderly population, loss of social values and so on reasons have made the elderly population more visible. These cases also revealed elderly problems.

                The modern lifestyle that precedes the individual and shaped by the relationships of pleasure and interest has brought problems in the family. The idea of the individual to see himself / herself as independent from the authority, and the idea of building a self-sufficient and self-centered world weakened the relationship of the family with other individuals, causing the elderly to be perceived as redundancy and excluded.

                Industrialization and urbanization highlighted the nuclear family type. The transformation of the family from the production unit to the consumption unit and the separation of the house and the workplace led the elderly to the edge of social life.

Modernleşme süreci bir anlamda toplumsal değişim sürecidir. Bu süreçte aile kurumu değişim yaşayan kurumların başında gelmektedir. Bu değişim savunmasız, dezavantajlı grubu oluşturan yaşlıları olumsuz etkilemektedir. Çalışmamızın problemi modernleşme sürecinde yaşlılığı bir sorun olarak ortaya çıkaran olguların neler olduğunu tespit etmektir. Bireyselleşme, sanayileşme ve kentleşme, aile yapısındaki değişim, yaşlı nüfusun artışı, toplumsal değerlerdeki kayıp vb. nedenler yaşlı nüfusu daha görünür hale getirmiştir. Bu olgular aynı zamanda yaşlı sorunlarını da ortaya çıkarmıştır.

Bireyi önceleyen, haz ve çıkar ilişkilerinin şekillendirdiği modern yaşam tarzı ailede sorunlarını da beraberinde getirmiştir. Bireyin kendini otoriteden bağımsız görmesi, insanının kendi başına yeteceği ve ben merkezli bir dünya inşa etme düşüncesi ailenin diğer bireylerle olan ilişkisini zayıflatmış, yaşlıların fazlalık olarak algılanmasına ve dışarıda tutulmasına neden olmuştur.

Modernleşme süreci ailenin yapısı, rol ve statüsünde ciddi değişmeler meydana getirmiştir. Sanayi öncesi toplumlarda yaşlı kişiler, ailenin büyüğü olarak gücü elinde bulundurmaktaydı. Modernleşme ile aile işlevlerinin bir kısmını kurumlara devretmiş, geleneksel bilgi değer kaybetmiş,  kadının iş yaşamına atılması vb. nedenler yaşlılara olan ihtiyacı azaltarak adeta onları kurum dışına itmiştir.

Toplumsal değerler ailenin koruyucu mihveri iken bugün ailenin üzerine inşa edildiği değerlerin aşındırılması, pozitivist ve pragmatist bir eğitim sisteminin bunu desteklemesi, ‘değer’ kabul edilen yaşlının ‘soruna’ dönüşmesine neden olmuştur.
