A Compilation Study On Premarital Education Content

Abstract

The increase in divorce rates and the decrease in marriage rates attract attention in many countries, especially in developed countries. It is seen that a similar situation occurs in Türkiye. Premarital education stands out as a solution to this issue. Although there is a general perspective that premarital education is beneficial, training issues need to be revealed scientifically in order to maximize the benefit of these trainings for the participants. At the beginning of the article, marriage and divorce data in Türkiye and European Union countries are stated, the necessity of premarital education is discussed and the general scope of domestic and international literature on the subjects that are/should be included in these trainings is stated. Educational issues arising from scientific research conducted domestically were analyzed and their common aspects with studies conducted abroad were evaluated. Issues such as effective communication skills, sexual health, relations with the family of origin, expectations from marriage, budget management in the family, problem/conflict solving skills, roles and responsibilities in marriage and child rearing are featured in research conducted in Türkiye as well as in research findings abroad. It has been determined that the subjects of spouse selection, family law, family life cycle and decision-making process in the family are included in the studies in the country. Determining premarital education topics by taking into consideration the needs of the target group will increase the impact of the training and contribute to its dissemination.
