The Novel of  Guy de Maupassant in accordance with pessimism and unhappiness: exemple of ‘A Life’ and Flaubert’s effect

 

Pessimism is one of the most favorite themes of a long period, beginning with Romantic authers and continuing with the realistic ones. The theme, though it differs in terms of the authers and subjects, reveals concluding opinions in any case in the 19th century literary works.

 

The theme of Maupassant is formed not in terms of Nihilistic concept, but of the rejection of specific values, so the auther’s novel named ‘A life’ includes both many negative details altogether from his own life and many details based on the meaning of the life and its difficulty. These plots which deepen the theme and nearly most of which come true in a specific negative direction, particularly stem from either a problematic family or social structure and results in deep-rooted pessimism, obsession of death, fear of loneliness, disloyalty, treachery, degeneration and hypocrisy due to the mechanism of triviality.

 

The novel, in which the effectes of Shaupenhauer and flaubert converged, tells the fact that a human being faces up to his own inevitable fate beyond himself in any case  within a determining concept. It also tells the conflict depening with trivial daily events due to the fact that some corrupted social  corporations and regulations, and thus the novel underlines the fact that nothing in the nature of a human being and a society, which always exist  is certain.

 

 

The adventure of Jeanne, the subject of a life full of displeasures and afflictions, each step she took, each event she experienced or imagined takes place in the subjective realm of a negative meta reality. A long way through which jeanne walks is the one which stresses that the life is neither good nor bad as thought.

 

In this study, it is aimed to reveal and interpret the roots of the themes of pessimism and unhappiness in the novel by Maupassant through a woman heroine, who is a dreamer, desirous, and who loves the life very much, but runs towards her own end with endless fancies and afflictions.

 

Kötümserlik, romantik yazarlarla başlayıp gerçekçilerle devam eden uzunca bir dönemin en gözde izleklerinden biridir. Yazara ve konuya bağlı olarak farklılaşmakla birlikte izlek 19.yüzyıl yazınında her durumda sonuçsal yargılar ortaya koyar. İzlek Maupassant’da, nihilizme varmayan bir çizgide, belli değerlerin reddi üzerinden kurgulanır. Bu anlamda yazarın Bir Hayat adlı romanı, bir yandan yazarın kendi yaşamından tamamen olumsuz çokça ayrıntı içerirken diğer yandan dönemin ortak algısından kaynaklanan ve yaşamın anlamı ve zorluğu temelli birçok güncel konuya eğilir. Maupassant’ın yapıtında söz konusu izleği derinleştiren ve neredeyse tümü belli bir olumsuzluk ekseninde somutlaşan bu olgular özellikle sorunlu bir ailesel ya da toplumsal yapıdan hareket eder ve devamlı bir değersizleş-tir-me mekanizması üzerinden derin kötümserlik, ölüm saplantısı, yalnızlık korkusu, sadakatsizlik, ihanet, yozlaşma ve ikiyüzlülük gibi sonuçlara çıkar. Schopenhauer ile Flaubert’in etkilerinin kesiştiği bir noktada duran roman, insanoğlunun her durumda kendisini aşan yazgısıyla kaçınılmaz yüzleşmesini determinist bir anlayışla ele alır. İnsanın varoluşunda yerleşik mutsuzluğun, gitmezliğin, çelişkinin gündelik yaşamın küçük olaylarıyla durmadan derinleşmesini bir takım toplumsal kurum ve kuralların dibe vuruşu üzerinden anlatır. Roman bu yolla sürekli oluşum halindeki insan ve toplum doğasında hiçbir şeyin mutlak ve kesin olmadığının altını çizer. Kırılmalar, üzüntüler ile dolu bir yaşamın öznesi olan Jeanne’in serüveni, attığı her adım, yaşadığı her olay, düşlediği her olgu bu anlamda olumsuz bir üst gerçekliğin öznel alanına oturmaktadır. Jeanne’in yürüdüğü uzun yol, yaşamın asla düşünüldüğü kadar iyi ya da kötü olmadığını vurgulamanın da yoludur. Bu çalışma, Bir Hayat’ın düşçü, arzulu, yaşamı çok seven ama durmadan sonsuz üzüntüler ve düşüşlerle kendi sonuna doğru koşan bir kadın kahraman üzerinden, Maupassant’da kötümserlik ve mutsuzluk izleklerinin köklerini ve görünümlerini ortaya çıkarmayı ve yorumlamayı amaçlamaktadır
